Reading an internet speed test correctly

OCS Ping measures the connection between your browser and OCS Ping test infrastructure. Ping is round-trip latency, jitter describes variation between latency samples, download measures data received by your browser and upload measures data sent back to the server.

The result is useful for checking this network path at this moment, but it is not a guaranteed measurement of the maximum speed sold by your internet provider. Server capacity, Wi-Fi quality, device load, routing and congestion can all influence the result.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a good ping?

Lower latency is generally better, but the expected value depends heavily on physical distance and routing to the test server.

Why is my result lower than my internet plan?

Wi-Fi, device performance, server capacity, protocol overhead, congestion and the route to the test server can all reduce measured throughput.

Does the speed test use data?

Yes. Download and upload testing transfers data, so it counts toward any metered connection or data allowance.
