Understanding common DNS record types

DNS translates names into the records needed by web, mail and other internet services. OCS Ping can query common public record types so you can inspect what resolvers currently return for a domain.

Different record types answer different questions. A and AAAA map names to IP addresses, MX directs email, NS identifies authoritative nameservers, TXT carries text-based configuration, CNAME aliases one name to another and CAA can restrict which certificate authorities may issue certificates for a domain.

FAQ

Common questions

Why do DNS changes not appear immediately?

Resolvers can cache earlier answers until their time-to-live values expire, so propagation is not instantaneous everywhere.

Can a domain have multiple A or AAAA records?

Yes. Multiple addresses can be published for redundancy, load distribution or other routing designs.

Is a CNAME the same as a redirect?

No. CNAME is a DNS alias. An HTTP redirect is an application-level response after a web connection is made.
