How domain WHOIS and RDAP registration lookups work

Domain registration data describes the registry and registrar record for a domain name. OCS Ping uses RDAP first when the top-level domain publishes an authoritative RDAP service through IANA, then falls back to the traditional WHOIS protocol only when needed and available.

The amount of public data varies by registry, registrar and applicable privacy rules. Registrar, registration dates, nameservers, DNSSEC and domain status are often available, while personal registrant contact details may be redacted or omitted.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP is the modern structured registration-data protocol delivered over HTTP/HTTPS. WHOIS is the older text-based port-43 protocol and is used here only as a fallback where appropriate.

Why is the domain owner name missing?

Registries and registrars may redact personal registration data because of privacy requirements or their publication policies. OCS Ping only displays information returned publicly by the authoritative service.

Does “no registration record” mean the domain is available?

Not necessarily. A missing RDAP or WHOIS record is not a guaranteed availability check. Use the registry or an accredited registrar before attempting registration.
